Dear Today You

Narrative 1 min read , October 13, 2021

Dear Today You,

I know it is hard to think of yourself. I know it is hard to think about a life that does not constantly consist of doctor appointments, medication, or spending every moment based on the time on someone else’s clock.

But, do not wait to think about yourself. Do not wait to make your appointments, take your trips, have that dinner with your friend, that glass of wine for your birthday, celebrate your accomplishments too. You will find a way to make it all work. You will find a way to make sure the person you care for is cared for, and I bet they will not even notice you are gone.

You know what else I can guarantee; you know who will notice if you do not do those things? You, your happiness, and your future self. There will come a time in your life where caregiving will not be the first thing on your to-do list; it might not even be on your list at all anymore.

I know it is hard to think about yourself. I know it is hard to think about a life that does not constantly consist of giving everything you have to someone else but remember to provide some care to YOU.

One day all the doctor appointments will be over, the medication bottles will be empty, and your family room will no longer be surrounded by machines, cords, or post-it note reminders. One day you will realize that it is your time now, and you do not want to learn that too late.

I promise it will be okay,

Future You
